Cheshire Ring revisited; In 1990, some twenty years after restoration was completed, we again cruised round the Cheshire Ring, to compare conditions with the mid 1960s. Our conclusion was that " by comparison with conditions in the early and mid sixties, [ the canals] had changed almost beyond recognition. Journies formerly entailing a week of hard work now took only gentle hours, without need to wrestle with weed and floating sedge. ... Shallow water was seldom encountered. Good moorings and facilities were widespread. ... The PFCS argument in their Cheshire Canal Ring publication that restoration would raise boat numbers and usage had been spectacularly vindicated." |
